HYMC Programs and Initiatives

HYMC Programs and Initiatives include: HYMC Educational Scholarship Program; HYMC Mentor Training Program; HYMC members’ networking opportunities with professional speakers; HYMC Mentor Recognition Breakfast; and the HYMC video.

HYMC Educational Scholarships  Scholarships are open to young students at least 15 years old who are committed to achieving educational goals, but who, because of financial hardship, are at significant risk of being unable to do so. Scholarships are not necessarily awarded because of academic achievement to date, but rather because of a student’s demonstrated desire to achieve educational goals despite adversity.

The call for applications is made each August. All applicants must be nominated by an HYMC member organization. Each February there is a Scholarships Presentation ceremony so which all members and sponsors are invited to attend.

HYMC Mentor Training Program HYMC mentor training programs provide the knowledge and skills required for youth mentoring. Training is to be provided by an accredited trainer who has industry experience. Currently Mentor Training Specialists are the trainers of choice. Training materials are provided by the training company. The course is designed and customised by the training company in consultation with training officer and participating organisations, to suit the requirements of the participants.

The core training components explore: • What is ‘mentoring’ and the mentoring process • The parameters of mentoring • Mentor Communication skilling • Child protection

Offered several times each year, and in a range of formats and locations that best suit the needs of those participating, programs are offered to both individuals and organizations. Format possibilities include – a premium 2-day program, a fast-track 1-day program, independent workshops and customized min-and-match programs. Costs vary. Contact us to find out more about the options available.

HYMC Networking Opportunities and Forum Four times a year, HYMC offers members an opportunity to meet together, network and hear from an expert in an area of interest to those working and volunteering in the support and mentoring of disadvantaged youth. Speakers are typically practitioners working with youth or researchers in relevant areas.

Presentations are for about 45 minutes and are preceded by a light lunch.

Each October during National Mentoring Week HYMC offers an afternoon forum to members. The nature of the forum is determined based on opportunities available. (It has often been a speaker followed by a panel discussion with the audience.)

Presentations and reports are now available from the HYMC Forum in October 2015:   Mission Australia, YOUniteReach, and the World Cafe discussion.

All are posted on our calendar.

HYMC Mentor Recognition Breakfast The annual HYMC end-of-year breakfast held each December celebrates and publicly recognizes the extraordinary work done by mentors in the Hunter Region. HYMC member organizations are invited to nominate mentors who in the last year have gone beyond what would normally be expected of a mentor.

A call for nominations is made in October.

HYMC Video HYMC has produced a video promoting mentoring. This video is shown regularly as a community service announcement on NBN. See the video here.
